Luke – Nov 29

Beyond “Not Tripping”Luke 17:3

“Take heed to yourselves” is literally “Pay attention to yourselves.” WHAT we’re to give attention to is our reaction to the offenses (stumbling blocks) scattered across our path mentioned in v. 1. Just because there’s a provocation to sin, doesn’t mean we have to. That’s what Jesus was talking about in the Sermon on the Mount when He said we’re to turn the other cheek and go the extra mile.

Instead of being provoked into sin by others, we’re to help them out of theirs. Jesus says when we’re offended; we’re to confront the offender. If they repent, we’re to forgive them.

As we saw Monday in v. 1, it’s inevitable offenses are going to happen. We’re not to be caught off guard by them. We’re to recognize them for what they are, and make sure they don’t trip us up. If an offense is given by a brother or sister in Christ, we’re to confront them about it. The hope is that they’ll own it, apologize, and seek God’s truth & grace to overcome it.
