If you're a believer who's also a net-crawler (someone who spends time on the internet) chances are you're already encountered something called the Emergent Church or the Emergent Church Movement. Unless you've done a LOT of reading, you're probably a bit confused about it. That's because there's no set definition for what "emergent" means.

I guess the safest definition or description for the emergent church movement (ECM) is an attempt to make the Gospel relevant to/in a postmodern culture. In fact, "relevance" seems to be quite a buzzword in the ECM. Since PoMo's (Postmoderns) have mostly given up on the idea of truth as an absolute, the ECM believes classical apologetics & traditional evangelism no longer work. What's needed is to show how the Gospel "fits" the felt-needs of modern people. It isn't that all ECMers reject Truth themselves (although some in fact do) it's that they don't believe rationalistic approaches appeal to people anymore. What the lost are looking for is relevance, a need for significance, and ECMers believe the Gospel is the best option out there to give that.

That's putting the best kind of face on the ECM. Sadly, many segments of the EC have become so embracing of postmodernism, they've drunk the poison of universalism. While they say the Gospel is the best way to God, it isn't the only way. Some of the main leaders of the ECM have taken this position. Others of its original leaders have rejected this movement toward universalism and distanced themselves from the ECM altogether.

All in all, when dealing with the Emergent Church or its larger movement, there's a need to exercise great care against lumping them all together under one definition because they are about as different as the word "car."

I must admit I'm one of those net-crawlers who have encountered the Emergent Church and even read a book of two out of curiosity. But like Lance said, we need to exercise great care (God's Word is the only benchmark) against lumping them all together under one definition. But I would like to add that some Christians unfairly apply this term too easily to dismiss some perspectives because of the uncomfortable truths facing the American church today. Be careful labeling somebody without backing it up with God's Holy Word. Which by the way, when taken seriously, has some radical uncomfortable truths that always confronts my fleshly human nature that gravitates toward dead religious tradition.

Here's one of my tests for all "Emergent" and "Non-Emergent" churches in America. (By the way, doctrinal creeds and statements are insufficient by themselves).

1) How does the "emergent" or "non-emergent" church walk-out the work of Christ's resurrection and transformational power to heal and set men free? (this is the true relevancy of the true Gospel)

2) How does the "emergent" or "non-emergent" church walk-out (remember, creedal statements by themselves are insufficient according to God's Word) the power, leading, and manifestations of the Holy Spirit (according to God's Word) in their personal lives? How real and authtentic is it? Authenticity from the Author of authenticity is the truly relevant need of this post modern age.

3) Does the "emergent" or "non-emergent" church have a BALANCED view of spiritual warfare as described in God's Word? Is the enemy dismissed as irrelevant and/or non-threatening in a believer's life? Does the "emergent" or "non-emergent" church seem a bit naive regarding the personal opposition that exists in the spiritual realm? The "spirit of the Anti-Christ" is alive and well today and our youth are horribly blinded by his deception. Again, creedal statements by themselves are insufficient in overcoming this diabolical enemy.

If I could describe the youth today, it is the search of authenticity. They want something that is real and authentic. They want it so bad they buy the counterfeits. The American church must offer the real deal! The American church must confidently offer an invitation that is demonstratively powerful and real. Otherwise, our youth will see right through the hollow and shallow creeds and doctrinal statements as just another bunch of words without meaning and relevancy.

By the way, I take this challenge personally. I ask myself these very same "tough and uncomfortable" questions daily.
