President Bush gave a news conference Monday, August 21 and fielded questions from the press about the war in Lebanon . He reiterated his commitment to seeing democracy spread to the nations of the world, especially the Middle East. As he renewed his commitment to promote free and democratic nations, it became clearer, like the final adjustments on a projector. Every time Bush repeats his commitment to promoting democratic nations in the Middle East it’s like pulling the trigger on a gun aimed at the United States . It adds one more stick of dynamite to the truck bomb used against one of our buildings. It adds a dozen more terrorists to the Holy Jihad against the West.
And it makes more clearly that those leading the War on Terror don’t get it. This ISN’T a War on Terror – it’s a War with Islam. The nations where Islam predominates know nothing of the Western idea of separation of Church and State. In Islam, the laws of religion ARE the State. The nation is governed by Sharia, Islamic Law, and civil rulers are religious men who hold no distinction between religious and civil authority. Sharia would take the entire world back to a 7th Century Saudi Arabian culture that dictates every aspect of life. Consider the pictures of people in Muslim nations you have seen. Remember the images of what life was like under the Taliban in Afghanistan . All the Taliban did was implement Sharia. And that is what Islam aspires to bring to the entire world. Indeed, this is the mission Mohammed commanded his followers to pursue. Do you get it? Democracy is an abomination to Islam! Democracy is incompatible with Sharia. When Bush says he believes the people of the world, and specifically the Middle East, long for free and democratic governments, what he’s doing is appealing to those who inwardly acknowledge they aren’t really very GOOD Muslims! He’s appealing to them to be “worldly,” and to their thinking, “ungodly.” So, while they might long to live in a free and democratic country, they feel guilt at this longing because it goes contrary to their religious values. From the growth in terrorism and the rise of militant Islam in recent years, it would seem the tension marginal Muslims feel is fueling their return to fundamentalist Islam, not democracy. Let me use an analogy: James, a marginal Christian, sees a pretty woman and experiences the temptation of lust. He keeps looking and the lust grows. He feels little conviction because his religious values have been weakened by many compromises. But all of a sudden, alongside the woman who’s become the object of his lust, James is able to see the devil standing, pointing at the woman and telling James to look more, to think increasingly lurid thoughts. James past experiences with faith have fashioned within him an awareness that the devil is a liar who seeks one thing, the destruction of his soul. So, James immediately turns away, and chastises himself for being suckered and seduced by the devil. He begins to think about how he allowed himself to come to such a place, and realizes he needs to renew his commitment to God. He’ll be in church the next Sunday. Transfer this scenario to the marginal Muslim. They may have longings for democracy. But hearing President Bush appeal to them is like, well – you get the picture. An appeal to democratic yearnings is having the opposite effect. Every time its made, Islam as a whole becomes more committed to it’s vision of global domination.
