Because it is part of the Hamas charter to work for the eradication of Israel and it’s leaders have called for the annihilation of the Jewish homeland, the United States , along with the European Union have threatened to cut off further funding. Question: Why the “threat?” Why not just do it?
US & European officials have said that Hamas must revoke that part of its charter that advocates the end to Israel or face the loss of millions of dollars in aid. Those same officials are in a wait and see mode for what the Hamas leadership will do. Well, they got their answer this week when one Hamas leader demanded Israel alter its flag. He called for Israel to remove the two blue stripes which are meant to symbolize the Jewish prayer shawl. Hamas believes they stand for the two rivers, Jordan and the Euphrates, and that Israel is a land that stretches along these geographical boundaries. Since Hamas wants Israel removed from their historical homeland any reference to the Jordan or the Euphrates is seen as unacceptable. Hamas has suggested that if the EU is concerned about the Jews, let them have a homeland in Europe. This demand by Hamas reveals the intractable nature of these people. First they distort the meaning of the Israeli flag, then, instead of dealing with the reasonable call for them to act like civilized people and revoke a barbaric clause in their charter, they only add fuel to the fire of hatred by a ludicrous requirement. How can you “negotiate” with people like this? Past talks have revealed any agreement made with them isn’t firm anyway. Their leadership changes overnight. Hamas won the elections because of the inordinate amount of corruption in the ruling Fatah party of Arafat and the current Palestinian President, Abbas. Hamas is well funded by numerous Arab countries. They used much of that funding for social work. They opened clinics, staged feeding and work programs for the desperate Palestinian people. Much of the foreign aid given by the US and the EU to Palestine went into the personal accounts of Fatah officials. The Palestinians knew of the corruption of the ruling party and Hamas “bought” their vote by using their funding by Islamic countries to feed & educate. The Palestinians consider the US and the EU corrupt partners of the Fatah gangsters they just voted out of office. Hamas has won the hearts of the people by being on the front lines of social need. And now that Hamas is in power, they will steer the Palestinian people toward a national Intifada that will make the past look like a party.
