CHRIST OUR IDENTITY - Exodus 31:13, Luke 6:5, Galatians 2:20 Jesus’ words, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath” say to the Jew, “Let Me be your identity!” God’s covenant with Moses was the sign of the Sabbath. It was given to remind Israel of their Creator. Unlike Abraham’s sign of circumcision, which was private and hidden, Moses’ sign was public and visible. The Sabbath became the national sign—how Israel was best identified among all the other nations on earth. And Jesus laid claim to their most visible, national identification! Some national holidays in America have been redefined over time: Labor Day is no longer a day for labor unions to organize and have member meetings. It is now a day to mark the end of summer and have a BBQ. Columbus Day is being widely replaced with “Indigenous People’s Day.” Thanksgiving is less about giving thanks to God for our nation, and...

SABBATH SURRENDER - Luke 6:2 & 7, John 11:47–48, Luke 22:25–26, James 4:13–15 Jesus’ words, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath” say to the Pharisee, “You are not large and in charge – I am!” The term “Lord” in the New Testament is used for both, “Master” and “Lord God.” The simplest meaning of “Lord of the Sabbath” is that Jesus is claiming to have authority to call the shots on this most critical day. But, the Pharisees wouldn’t give up their self–appointed position as “masters” of the Sabbath easily! You see, the Pharisees saw it at their duty to enforce the Sabbath, and the other details of the Law of Moses, in order to protect Israel from another exile to a foreign nation. They were the “masters” of the Sabbath—as a matter of national survival! But, because they weren’t simply trusting God’s word, they ruined the intent of the Sabbath for everyone! What...

Faith's Risk – Luke 1:26-38 Read the account of Gabriel’s message to Mary about her role in giving birth to the long-awaited Messiah in Luke 1:26-38. Following the practice of that time, Mary was most likely around 13 years old. In our time, that’s about the age of a middle-schooler. As a betrothed woman, she was about to embark on the life she’d spent the previous few years preparing for. Then Gabriel shows up and announces she’s the object of a specific part of God’s plan that will dramatically pre-empt her plans. What will happen to her has the potential of blowing up her impending marriage and forever ruining her reputation, to the degree that she may lose all her friends and be forever alienated from her family. So take careful note of the amazing response Mary gives to Gabriel’s announcement – “Let it be to me according to your word.” Consider what...

"Where'd my money go?" Is that right? We’ve all asked that question. The problem is that it’s the wrong question. The question ought to be: “What did we do with God’s money?” In Haggai 2:8 the Bible says, “’The silver is Mine and the gold is Mine,’ declares the Lord of hosts.”  Silver and gold has been a standard for money since ancient times. We’ve only started using debt as a backing for money in recent decades (which really doesn’t make sense). So, because silver and gold belong to God, then maybe we should spend our finances in such a way that pleases the Lord. I’m sure some will respond, “But I worked hard for MY money!” Okay, but Who gave you the skills, talents, abilities, and health that made that a possibility? In fact-- isn’t God the reason behind your having a job at all? Therefore, since the Lord is providing for us through...

Just before His Ascension into heaven, Jesus told His disciples to go to Jerusalem to pray. Jesus had been crucified, had been buried, had risen from the dead, and now after forty days with His disciples, He is about to return to His Father in Heaven where He would sit down on His throne and where He would then do what He told His disciples to do...

“And he said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”   Luke 10:2 ESV Jesus says something profound in this verse. He calls us to pray for “laborers”. Not angels or another heavenly being to do His bidding. Not heroes. Laborers. Ordinary people like you and me. This is a shock to most of us because if you know anything about God, you know that He is all powerful. He spoke the world into existence. He is much wiser and stronger than anyone or anything. And if He were to delegate anything to anyone, wouldn’t He pick angels? Most people almost fainted or became like dead men when they met with an angel in the Bible. Surely they would gather bigger crowds and keep better attention than us humans. And even in all...
