Read Luke 20:20-25

The question Jesus asked in v. 23 is crucial and a key to understanding this entire section. His opponents came to Him with challenges they assumed presented dilemmas that would shut Him up and shut His career down. But they were like novice chess players sitting across the board from a Grand Master. You can’t win a war of words with The Word of God.

Jesus answered their  query about taxes. But before He did, He posed them a question they didn’t answer but ought have. “Why do you test Me?” Why indeed!

Oh that they’d taken that question seriously, paused then and there and worked through to the real answer.

This is the question we all ought to ask often: Why? Why do I believe what I believe? Why do I hold the attitudes I do? Why do I do the things and say the things I do?
