Luke – Day 6

ROOTED IN HISTORY – Luke 2:1-2; 1 Corinthians 15:3-6; Psalm 90:2

And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria.

Luke was in all likelihood a servant of a new believer name Theophilus, who’d dispatched him to investigate and document the origins of the Gospel and the Church. The Gospel of Luke and Book of Acts are the result of Luke’s investigation. He’s careful to locate Jesus’ story in an historical setting and timeline. So he puts Jesus’ birth next to what he knows are events his readers were familiar with.

While today, there are a few scoffers who deny that Jesus was a real, historical person, NO ONE back in the 1st or 2nd centuries argued that. On the contrary; they all KNEW He was real. They may have argued over the meaning of His life and mission, but no one doubted He’d lived.

This is what separates Christianity (and Judaism) from all other religions. They are based primarily on the philosophical musings of mystics and gurus. Even Islam is based on Mohammed’s supposed revelations by an angel. Christianity is rooted in solid, verifiable historical events. Jesus was really born, performed numerous remarkable miracles, died, and rose again from the dead. We believe what we believe precisely because the One who told us what to believe proved by His life, death and resurrection we ought to.
