Luke: Day 39

Would Be Better WithoutLuke 9:54

What stories from their past might James and his brother John have been thinking about when they asked Jesus if He wanted them to call down fire from heaven on the Samaritans?

What does their request suggest about what they were thinking? Would they have asked permission to do this unless they believed it was worth doing? What does that tell you about their attitude toward the men, women and children in this village?

Most people are appalled by James’ and John’s attitude here. But it provides us an opportunity to ask ourselves an important question: Are there people or groups we think the world would be better without? Are there people we’d like permission from God to “take out”?
